Description

This series contains photographs, brochures, magazine articles and site plans related to art galleries, cinemas (including a drive-in cinema), theatres and cultural centres across Australia and in Christchurch, New Zealand in the 1950s and 1960s. Included are architectural competition entries for the National Gallery of Australia and Sydney Opera House. The photographs in this series were published in the Cross-Section newsletter between 1955 and 1970. Notable buildings include Myer Music Bowl, Dallas Brooks Hall, Festival Hall and Sydney Opera House. Notable architects include Jorn Utzon, Yuncken Freeman Griffiths Simpson, Grounds Romberg & Boyd and Enrico Taglietti. Notable photographers include Wolfgang Sievers, Mark Strizic and Richard Edwin Stringer.

Seven black and white prints of the Adelaide Festival Centre, Elder Park, Adelaide, SA. One photograph is an aerial view of the model for the Centre. Three photographs are of external views of the completed buildings and three are internal views, two of which are the theatre. Architect: Stephenson & Turner, builder: not known and photographer: theatre views Colin Ballantyne & Partners Pty Ltd. A photograph of a different view of the model was published in Cross-Section no. 204, Nov 1969. In addition there are the Adelaide Festival Trust Press Release with the schedule of technical facilities for the Festival Theatre, two folded brochures describing the Centre, an article entitled "Bigger and Better?" by Iain Mackintosh which includes a section and plan of the Festival Theatre (source unknown) and a poor quality copy of the site plan, all contained in a folder titled Adelaide Festival Centre.
